Date:2012-04-17 00:00

In his capacity as International Senior Consultant, Professor Ian Rockett of West Virginia University visited Zhejiang University’s Tobacco Control Research Center from March 26 until April 7, 2012. He was warmly welcomed upon his arrival on campus by the center director, Professor Tingzhong Yang, and members of his team.

Dr. Ian Rockett is Professor of Epidemiology in the newly emerging School of Public Health at West Virginia University. He holds three graduate degrees - an MA in sociology from the University of Western Ontario, a PhD in demography and medical sociology from Brown University, and an MPH in epidemiology from Harvard University. An internationally known and respected epidemiologist and population scientist, his research has centered on the two interconnected areas of injury and substance use and abuse. He has a related interest in health data disparities. Dr. Rockett is on the editorial board of Suicidology Online, an associate editor of BMC Public Health, and has regularly served as a national judge at the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) competition in the United States of America.

On March 28, Dr. Rockett made a research presentation to undergraduate and graduate students in the Zhejiang University School of Medicine. His presentation highlighted the problem of suicide undercounting, and more specifically shed light on the Black-White suicide paradox and links between undercounting and the U.S. poisoning epidemic. Dr. Rockett’s presentation greatly stimulated student interest in the suicide accounting problem in China and the United States, especially the issue of undercounting. Following the presentation, students asked many provocative questions amidst a very lively discussion.

During his visit, Dr. Rockett worked closely with Professor Yang on new and extant center projects. We believe that our Tobacco Control Research Center will run more successfully thanks to his professional guidance and assistance. Also noteworthy for this bulletin, Dr. Rockett and Professor Yang delivered academic lectures to public health students and faculty at Shaoxing University on March 29 and Xuzhou Medical College on April 4, in response to formal invitations. University leaders from these respective institutions were in the audience at both events, which underscored their high importance and significance. In addition, they met with Dr. Rockett and Professor Yang for followup discussions.
