Tobacco Dependence and Smoking Cessation Association was established in China

On 5th November 2021, the inaugurating meeting of Tobacco Dependence and Smoking Cessation Branch of Chinese Association of Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment took place in Wuhan, Hubei Province.  Professor Yanhui Liao (an addiction psychiatrist from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital) was elected as chairman of the first branch committee.People attended the branch inaugurating meeting including Professor Wei Hao, chairman of Chinese Association of Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment, Professor Tingzhong Yang from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Center for Tobacco Control Research, Professor Jianping Liu, chief of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Centre for Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine, Professor Pinpin Zheng from Fudan University School of Public Health, and Professor Xiaohong Wu from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital. In total, over ninety people across the country attended this meeting including representatives of the branch committee, experts and scholars of psychiatry, pneumology, and council member representatives and committee experts of Chinese Association of Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment.

During the academic seminar on the afternoon, Professor Tingzhong Yang, Professor Jianping Liu and Chunli Lu, Professor Yong Zhou and Yanhui Liao, and Professor Yanxue Xue gave keynote speech based respectively on Introduction of Behavioral Theory of Smoking Cessation, Current Situation and Challenges of Evidence-Based Smoking Cessation with Chinese Medicine, Clinical Practice and Research of Smoking Cessation Clinic in Comprehensive Hospital, as well as Targeted Intervention of Nicotine and Addiction Memory. They fully elaborated the current situation home and abroad of research on nicotine addiction and smoking cessation and shared faced problems and opinions towards them, which gave attendees a clearer picture of the status quo. This live meeting reached over 7000 views online.

After a thorough discussion over the topic of Nicotine Addiction and Smoking Cessation by experts attending this meeting, Professor Tingzhong Yang from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Center for Tobacco Control Research hosted the inaugurating meeting of Tobacco Dependence and Smoking Cessation Branch of Chinese Association of Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment. During the election of the branch members, Dr. Yanhui Liao from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital was elected as chairman, and Professor Jianping Liu from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Centre for Evidence-Based Chinese Medicine, Professor Pinpin Zheng from Fudan University School of Public Health, and Professor Jinsong Tang and Professor Xiaohong Wu from Zhejiang University School of Medicine Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital were elected as vice chairman. Twenty standing committee members, 64 committee members, 1 secretary-general, and 2 deputy secretaries-general were also elected.

Dr. Yanhui Liao, chairman of the first committee of Tobacco Dependence and Smoking Cessation Branch, voiced that tobacco use is one of the biggest threat towards public health faced by the whole world. It is one of the most important health service work of medical staff to help smokers quit smoking. Dr. Yanhui Liao also wished that with joint efforts, committee members from different specialties related to smoking control, smoking cessation, and basic research could contribute to the cause of smoking control and cessation of our country, thus accelerating the process of reaching the goal of smoking control according to Tutorial for Outline of the Healthy China 2030 Plan.

Yanhui Liao, Female, Doctor of Medicine, Researcher (Zhejiang University “Hundred Talents Program”), doctoral supervisor. After graduating with doctor degree, Yanhui Liao began to work at Department of Psychiatry, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, and in November 2019, she was hired to Department of Psychiatry, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. She once studied at the University of Chicago and the University of Cambridge, did visiting research at Institute for Global Tobacco Control, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and did postdoctoral work at University of California, Los Angeles and King’s College London. She has hosted multiple research programs related to the National Natural Science Foundation of China (youth program and general program), Chinese Psychiatric Association, the Global Research Awards for Nicotine Dependence, and Shenghua Lieying Project of Central South University. She has hosted multiple special lectures of international academic conferences. She is deputy editor of public psychiatric health column of Frontiers in Psychiatry, Frontiers in Public Health, and Frontiers in Sociology. Her main research field is addictive medicine, and she has published over 30 papers as first/corresponding author in international journals including PLOS Medicine, Biological Psychiatry, Brain, Addiction, Tobacco Control, Journal of Behavioral Addictions. She has edited a professional book called Smoking Cessation: Theory and Practice and a popular science book called Evidence-based Smoking Cessation: Quit for Good. She has won a national patent licensing, Nominee Award for China National Top 100 Excellent Ph.D Thesis 2010, Early Career Psychiatrist Fellowship of the 18th WPA (World Psychiatric Association) World Congress of Psychiatry, and Young Investigator Award of the 14th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry.
